What Is an Affidavit of Loss?

An affidavit of loss is a sworn, notarized declaration stating that a specific document, item, or property has been lost, destroyed, or stolen. In Dubai and the UAE, this affidavit is a legal prerequisite for obtaining replacement documents, filing insurance claims, accessing bank accounts (where an original document has been lost), or satisfying government or institutional requirements.

By signing an affidavit of loss before a licensed notary public, you are legally certifying the circumstances of the loss and assuming personal liability for any consequences should the original document surface later.

Should I File a Police Report Before the Affidavit?

The police report number is typically referenced in the affidavit of loss for additional credibility and legal protection.
